CBC Publications: A Checklist

CBC Checklist

Ah, the joy of part-time projects. I thought this was going to be as easy as looking up a few web pages or surfing Amazon. But it seems that no one has ever bothered to create any type of bibliography or checklist of books issued by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Which seems absurd, really. I know I can’t be right…I just haven’t found it, yet.

I mean, come on. Some of the most intelligent books in the history of Canadian letters have been issued by the CBC: The Educated Imagination, Necessary Illusions, The Real World of Technology, just to name a few.

And look at a partial author list of the Massey Lectures alone:

  • Northrop Frye
  • C. B. Macpherson
  • Paul Goodman
  • Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • R. D. Laing
  • George Grant
  • George Steiner
  • Claude Levi-Strauss
  • Jane Jacobs
  • Carlos Fuentes
  • Doris Lessing
  • Noam Chomsky
  • Ursula Franklin
  • John Ralston Saul
  • Michael Ignatieff
  • Alberto Manguel
  • Margaret Atwood

This list includes Nobel Laureates, for crying out loud.

I’ve only just started, but already have a fairly substantial list of publications starting from the early 60’s to present-day, mostly of transcripts issued as books from CBC’s flagship Ideas radio program and the Massey Lectures series.

The idea of having a complete list of CBC publications is a fairly lofty goal. Just doing a preliminary list of web searches turned up a fairly large avalanche of titles. I’m not sure I have time (or the inclination) to track down every CBC journalist, on-air personality, or writer. But I’m starting to come up with some guidelines for creating a list:

  • Only books that have been issued by the CBC or House of Anansi (who took over printing duties from the several CBC imprints that have come and gone over the years)
  • Listing as much publication details as possible, within reason (this will not be a list for spotting first or rare editions, but a list for people interested in reading the books themselves)
  • Listing transcript details, when possible (the group of folk who produce the radio and television shows these books are based upon deserve credit)
  • I’m also very interested in design details, so will give those when possible

I actually don’t own many of these. There have been 47 Massey Lectures alone since 1961. I expect to make use of the Toronto Library system extensively. But what a collection it would make!

I’ve also never catalogued before, which is slightly different from making a bibliography.

I’m posting a partial list…just a checklist, really, below. There’s about another dozen or so books, and even more leads (each lead, I’m sure, will lead to another dozen titles), to track down. Note this list is currently ‘unverified’, in the sense that I haven’t physically verified that every entry even exists…most of this information comes from wikis, online databases, and other sources. I will be verifying as much of it as I can in the coming months.

If you have any info, add a comment to this entry (I check comments to this blog regularly).

    Hi Jeff,

I’ve posted MP3s of the Contemporary Psychiatry series that my grandfather produced for the CBC University of the Air. We also have a copy of the accompanying book that was published and hope to post a pdf soon.

Can’t answer that. This isn’t associated with the CBC, it’s a personal project, and I don’t have access to that type of information.

Jeff, I’m sending you a copy of Air Fare, a low-brow addition to this list that includes recipes from on air personalities circa 1984.

Jody, I received the book through inter-office mail this week. Thank you! I’ve been meaning to update this list for awhile, but am currently engaged heavily at work.

I knew at the beginning that I could get a lot of the ‘low-hanging fruit’ quickly, because the Massey Lectures and Ideas stuff is well-documented, but the books by various on-air personalities would be a bigger challenge.

I’m glad you liked the post. Thanks again for the book.

      Take care.

I’m not sure whether you are still working on this project, but if you are you might be interested in using Open Library for your list. I’m using it as I work on a list of Massey Lectures at the moment.
