The Corporation

May 27, 2009

I’ve been reading Joel Bakan’s The Corporation, and I’m deeply struck by the fact that the issues raised seem very new, but I’ve been seeing it since the 80’s. In fact, anyone who was into cyberpunk back then could have told you about everything in that book (and documentary) way back then.

Films like Aliens and Robocop, books like Neuromancer and Snow Crash, don’t seem like science fiction anymore, but of course, they never really were science fiction to begin with.

They were social commentary.

I like the book’s strong emphasis on democracy and regulation as prime candidates for keeping corporations under control, and not NGO’s and ‘the invisible hand’ of markets.

Honestly, the invisible hand is very visible, and it’s has a lot of blood on it.
